Living the Dream
by Matt Pross

Doing what you love for a living is everybody’s dream. When work doesn’t feel like work, but is instead like your favorite hobby, you’ve really got it made.

From this perspective, Nick Goossen is one lucky dude. While studying information systems in college, he began dabbling in computer programming. It didn’t take long for Goossen to realize that he wanted to pursue programming as way more than just a hobby. Now, after seven years of experience in the industry, Goossen is still living the dream. Along with two like-minded colleagues, John Hidey and Michael Bird, Goossen started Sharp Dudes, a firm specializing in software architecture and engineering, in December 2007.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Black Box to Introduce Enhanced Version of Wireless Video Projector System
Black Box Corporation (NASDAQ:BBOX), an industry-leading provider of voice communications, data infrastructure, and product solutions, announced that it will be introducing an enhanced version of its popular VGA Wireless Video Presentation System (VPS), one that supports PDA connectivity and 4-to-1 split-screen projection. It also features a “plug-and-show” token for fast setup by meeting participants.

As with the standard AC1130A VPS system, the new Plus version (part #AC1131A) is an 802.11b/g receiver that plugs into any display device with a VGA port, enabling a roomful of laptop users to access a projector or other device from hundreds of feet away. The Plus version, however, works with both PC and Mac® computers, supports communications with mobile PDA devices, and has features to enhance meeting productivity.

The VPS Plus supports Windows® Mobile 5.0 and above systems for Wi-Fi® links to handheld devices, so users can project images from PDA type devices. “No more lugging a laptop along to a meeting,” says Mario Calabro, Black Box Multimedia Products Manager. “To share information through a projector, just log on from your PDA and begin streaming images from wherever you are.”

The VPS Plus is ideal for anyone who wants more conference room collaboration but doesn’t want to run multiple cables to and from a VGA projector. The addition of the plug-and-show token lessens setup time for individual participants. They simply plug the token into their computer’s USB port and, in a matter of seconds, they can be wirelessly projecting their computer screen onto a large overhead screen seen by an entire room or lecture hall.

Farmers at Phipps - Phipps Conservatory hosts unique farmers market for summer and fall
Now through October 28th, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will host its first-ever farmers market, held every Wednesday from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Located on Phipps’ historic lawn, Farmers at Phipps will feature 20 vendors of local, certified organic and Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) products. The farmers will sell a variety of products including vegetables, meats, cheeses, eggs, bread, seedlings, honey, cut flowers, soap and perennials.

In conjunction with PASA’s (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture) “Buy Fresh, Buy Local” program, an initiative that encourages the purchase of local produce, Phipps wants to inspire people to bring more natural, organic items into their homes. "PASA proudly supports regional farmers' markets, such as Phipps’. These community markets are where farmers and consumers can connect and discuss the most important of all 'green' issues: local food,” says PASA’s Western Regional Director, Greg Boulos.

Phipps’ proximity to local universities and businesses, easy access to downtown and plentiful parking offer patrons a convenient opportunity to buy fresh, local, organic and Certified Naturally Grown farm products. Kelly Ogrodnik, sustainable design and programs manager at Phipps, adds “Farmers at Phipps is a natural extension of our sustainability initiatives that focus on gardening practices, operations and building design. By hosting the farmers market, we hope to help bridge the gap between people, plants and food in a manner that reflects the environmentally friendly land use practices utilized in our own facility.”

Phipps’ inaugural farmers market includes, among many others, representatives from Northwest Pennsylvania Growers Co-op, Clarion River Organics, Mildred’s Daughters Urban Farm, Blackberry Meadows Farm and Wolf Lake Farms for a fair that will provide a wholesome shopping experience.
