Harnish is founder and CEO of Gazelles, Inc., a premier executive coaching program for leaders of mid-size firms with 30 to 2,000 employees.

USER GROUP SPOTLIGHT 
IT Software Development Process and Tools User Group
A new user group is forming in southwestern Pennsylvania.  The vision of the group is to share knowledge about processes and tools that help IT improve efficiency, re-use, and traceability for software development.  Individuals responsible for delivering high quality software or business solutions and interested in governance and traceability through the use of standard processes and tools such as IBM'sRational Tool Suite are welcome to attend. The group will provide a forum for these attendees to meet regularly to discuss issues, view demonstrations/tutorials and share experiences.  For more info on the group contact James Kuminkoski or Geri Winters. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY 
YWCA Robotics Team
During the months of January through March 2008, the YWCA will host an all-girl team, called “YWCA Delta F.O.R.C.E.,” in the Southwestern Pennsylvania Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. This robotics team of high school girls is a part of the YWCA TechGYRLS program that is designed to increase interest and familiarity in the fields of technology, where there is a gender gap between men and women.

The YWCA Delta F.O.R.C.E. team is currently searching for sponsors, mentors and coaches for training and competition. Members of the Pittsburgh Technology Council and their associates who are interested in supporting this all-female team may contact the YWCA Teen Leadership Institute at 412.365.1938.



CAREER CENTER  

The Pittsburgh Technology Council’s Career Center  currently boasts more than 1,400 open positions. For many students and recent graduates, this tool provides invaluable connections to internship and job openings within southwestern Pennsylvania. Council member companies use this resource to find basic entry-level candidates, seasoned C-level professionals and everyone in between. Candidates are encouraged to apply for positions through the Career Center and to post their resumes in our online resume database for recruiter viewing.

Innovation Works Announces the Launch of AlphaLab
Innovation Works announces the launch of AlphaLab, a catalyst for the next generation of software, interactive game design and Internet-related companies. Innovation Works created AlphaLab to help companies rapidly develop their technology, gain user feedback from early alpha or beta releases and move toward successful commercial launch. An intensive six-month program in Pittsburgh for up to six companies per cycle, AlphaLab will provide funding, free office space, expert business advisors and services. Innovation Works engaged an extensive regional and national advisory group of industry experts, entrepreneurs, investors, academics, students and others to help shape the AlphaLab program.
 
AlphaLab is now accepting applications for the 2008 Summer/Fall program. The application deadline is March 31.

Volunteers Needed for BotsIQ Robotics Competition

The BotsIQ program introduces high school students to the entire manufacturing process as they design, build, troubleshoot and compete with 15 pound battling remote-controlled robots. The program has grown from 8 participating schools in 2006 to 32 schools in 2008. It generates excitement and encourages students to acquire the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills needed by regional industries.

Volunteers are needed on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, for the BotIQ Robotics Competition being held at Century III Mall in West Mifflin, Pa. Volunteering is a great way to be inspired by what high school students are doing and to be a part of an exciting event that promotes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Positions that must be filled include:
        • Safety Inspectors (requires technical background)
        • Safety Monitors 
        • Competition Queue Monitors 
        • Volunteer and Team Registration 
        • Team Photo Assistants 
        • Miscellaneous Monitoring Positions

Volunteer time slots will be divided into shifts for a specific time period, for the entire day, or for both days to accomodate scheduling.

Available Shifts:
Friday, March 28    Saturday, March 29
9:30 - 3 p.m.      9:30 - 2:30 p.m.
2:30 - 8:30 p.m.    1:30 - 7 p.m.
